Description

In Patrols, Scouts decide on their priority badges. Including giving the PLs some skills in leadership and reflecting on how they respond to changing circumstances.

Resources

A selection of random badge requirements. Examples attached. Two sets of five for every patrol, eg if there are four patrols then 4 copies of camper, 4 of chef etc until there are ten sets of badge requirements in total. Then group them together in fives, so for one exercise give out the exact same five badge requirements to each patrol.

Paper and pens

A way of the leaders recording the results.

Instructions

Exercise one - Patrol Leaders skills

Take the patrol leaders to a separate room and pose the following problem - what would you do if you were tasked to make a decision, such as a priority order in a patrol. What would you need? What problems would you face? How would you overcome them?

This will probably bring up things like how do I make Freddy concentrate? As a group they can come up with ideas on how to solve that.

Exercise two - Badge choices (one)

In Patrols they are given the same set of five badge requirements.
They are told:
- As a patrol you need to decide which badge you would like to work towards, and which one is the least favourite. They should be numbered one to five - one being the most favourite.
- One of them from each patrol will need to feed back to the group which is their favourite and why
- Any questions?

Answer questions truthfully.

DO NOT tell them how long they get (unless it is a question they ask), Or any context to help decide - eg we do not have a caving instructor, or money in the budget to go caving,

Give them five minutes to complete the exercise. They do not know that they only have five minutes. They will struggle to do it in that time frame, Get one from each to report back.

Exercise three - reflection (one)

As a Troop reflect on how the exercise went. If they knew they only had five minutes would they approach it differently? Would context help? How did the Patrol Leaders work on including everyone? What would you do differently if you did the same exercise?

Exercise four - Badge choices (two)
They are given the second set of badge requirements and repeat the exercise. This time they can be given more information. Perhaps they will negotiate ten minutes instead of five (but it still should be a short exercise).

Exercise Five - final reflections

As a troop and/or as patrol leaders, any final reflections.
