Description
Strava-tracked map doodles, coordinated over walkie-talkies using what3words.
The aim of this activity is to learn how to communicate clearly over the radio and generate art whilst having fun.
Resources
Two walkie talkies for each team (one for base unit, one for field unit)
Two or more mobile phones with Strava and What3words apps.
Instructions
Leaders:
- Define bounds of the activity (e.g. a local recreation ground or playing field).
- Form teams of 4-6 people.
- Number or name each team.
- Once a drawing has been completed, swap the units over.
- See whose sketch is closest to the original instructions.
Teams:
- Split each team into two units. In this example we will use A (Alpha) and B (Bravo).
- The unit's callsign is "<team> <unit>" e.g. "One Alpha" or "Two Bravo".
Unit Alphas:
- Agree the first coordinate and proceed there. Enable Strava tracking, and await instructions over the radio.
- On receipt of a new coordinate, unit Alpha will proceed to the coordinate (using W3W compass), then notify Bravo over the radio.
- Once the last coordinate is reached, return to base, see if the drawing is accurate, and swap.
Unit Bravos:
- Devise a simple sketch/drawing over a local what3words grid. Noting down a list of the w3w waypoint coordinates in order. The drawing should have at least twenty waypoints. The first coordinate should be given to unit Alpha as they set off.
- Unit Bravo will relay each coordinate, one at a time, to team Alpha.
Operating Procedure:
- You are not the only users of any given frequency. If someone else is speaking, do not transmit (both transmissions will be garbled).
- Always use both your callsign and the callsign of the station you are communicating with.
- Press the transmit button before you start speaking.
- Speak slowly and clearly.
- Use “over” to signify your message is sent and you are expecting a reply.
- Use “out” to signify the end of conversation.
- Radio communication can often be difficult to understand, so use the NATO phonetic alphabet to pass clear, precise messages.
- Walkie talkies work best when standing up and with antennas vertical.
