Description
Use the night sky to find the combination for a locked treasure box!
Resources
Printed (in colour) the powerpoint document, which is set up for 3x groups (each with a different combination). You will also need pen/pencil and ruler for each group.
Instructions
- Print the powerpoint and set up your treasure chests. We used cheap toolboxes and number lock padlocks. Set the padlock combinations according to each of the three puzzle sheets, the answer to each sheet is noted in the 'notes' section of the slide. Optional extra detail - label each box, one with a square, one with a circle, and one with a triangle. There is a small shape in the top left of each puzzle sheet (so you can keep track of which slide belongs to which group!) but this adds a new layer of making each group have to figure out which chest is theirs. The combos are: Square 375; Circle 185; Triangle 289.
- Hand one set of slides to each group (1 instruction slide - the first in the deck; and 3x puzzle slides labelled first, second, and third number). Ensure each group has at least one pen and ruler.
- One group member should read the instructions, with one puzzle sheet per 1-2 group members. By following the instructions, each puzzle sheet produces a single number. The correct answer is noted in the "notes" section on the powerpoint.
- Once the group has the answer to each slide, enter the combination to the appropriate chest and voila!
Some common pitfalls our group ran into: some of our members didn't know what a right angle was and had drawn the second line off at a different angle. Some had drawn the second line from one of the pointers rather than halfway between the pointers. Not using a ruler is likely to give you an incorrect answer.
