The rising water experiment demonstrates how changes in air temperature and pressure can move liquids. When a glass is placed over a burning candle in a tray of water, the water is eventually "sucked" up into the glass.
How it Works
Heating: The candle flame heats the air inside the glass, causing it to expand. Some air may even escape as bubbles from the bottom.
Oxygen Depletion: As the candle burns, it consumes oxygen and releases carbon dioxide and water vapour.
Cooling: Once the oxygen is used up, the flame goes out. The air inside the glass cools down rapidly.
Pressure Drop: Cool air takes up less space than hot air, creating a partial vacuum (lower pressure) inside the glass. The higher atmospheric pressure outside pushes the water into the glass until the pressure is equalized.
