Expedition Preparation

Report Copyright Infringement View in OSM UK

Description

There's no substitute for boots on the ground, but these challenges will fill a useful hour on a miserable winter evening and help with the actual Expedition planning as we look towards the summer.
There are 5 challenges that the Patrols can rotate around, spending 10 minutes on each, leaving plenty of time for a debrief and some games.
The challenges are based around the 5 elements of the Expedition Challenge
Route Planning
Navigation
Equipment
What to do in an emergency
Cooking a meal

Resources

Each patrol will need access to the internet for the research elements of the challenges.
This could be their own phones or tablets, or troop / community computers - whatever you have access to.

You'll need to download and print out the following.
Simple Risk Assessment Template.xlsx
5x5 Risk Matrix Example
Map Hazards - blank worksheet.docx
Map Hazards.docx (Answer sheet for the map hazard worksheet)
Kit List Cards.docx (Will need cutting up into separate cards)

One or more leaders will also need to have access to a device with the BagPackChecklist.xlsx spreadsheet running (unless you really want to run all the calculations manually)

Instructions

Have each of the 5 patrols find a space, or a table.
They will each have 10 minutes (or more if you have the time) to complete the following challenges before moving around to the next one.

1. Route planning - We do lots of map reading so decided to test another skill this time. Using the internet, plan a timetable to get from our Scout Hall to Tolmers Campsite only using public transport. How much will it cost per person and what time would we need to set off to arrive before 17:00 hours on Saturday

2. Using the Map Hazards - Blank Worksheet document, identify the hazards on or near the paths in the 10 images. Discuss what actions you would take to negotiate them safely

3. Place the 48 cards from the Kit List Cards.docx on the table. Scouts need to choose which items will go in their rucksacks. A leader can use the BagPackChecklist.xlsx to calculate the approximate pack weight and space requirements of the chosen kit - There are a couple of notes to bear in mind. 1. The tent weight and pack size is halved - it assumes 2 Scouts sharing the tent between them. 2. There is no pack weight or space for the hiking poles - it's there to to prompt a discussion - e.g. if the Scouts choose a Tarp, how will they support it without poles? 3. There are three hidden columns with the weights and pack sizes in - there is no password to unlock the spreadsheet - it's just locked to make it easier to input the chosen kit items without making any accidental changes.

4. Using the Simple Risk Assessment Checklist, identify some hazards associated with an expedition and what can be done to reduce the risk - this will no doubt include such hazards as Alien Invasion but may also prompt some serious discussion too - don't worry too much if it doesn't though, even if they make a joke out of it, they're still thinking about the Risk Assessment process and learning without realising :)

5. Plan a simple expedition meal - Scouts will need to think about how they cook using a simple stove as well as how much extra water they'll need and the approximate weight of the food per person which will need to be added to the pack weight in Challenge 3
