Squirrels Lolly stick rafts
Report Copyright Infringement View in OSM UK
Description
Making a lolly stick raft that floats for our duplo character to go on an adventure. Alternative rafts can be of duplo or card.
Can be done inside or outside
Resources
Duplo person or animal
3 or 4 lolly sticks (straight ones if possible)
pre cut string
Duplo
card
washing up bowl full of water for each group
Instructions
Adult to demonstrate how to make the raft by using 4 lolly sticks. Firstly tye a knot on one stick then weave the string over and under then wind it back and tye it off with an overhand knot. Repeat another twice always starting a different end each time to tie the knot to make it secure. Finish by threading a lolly stick over and under the secured lolly sticks .
Children to then be given a length of string and a lolly stick to make their first knot whilst sitting in the circle. Again show how to do an overhand knot - adults to support any children who need assistance.
Children to choose their duplo character and go off in their nests (groups of 4 or 5) with an adult to help to make their rafts. On their table will be additional lolly sticks and precut string. Also cut up card and Duplo they can use as alternatives.
Once made their raft is ready to try out in the water! Take it in turns to try out in the washing up bowl.
Reflections : Does it float? Could their character go on an adventure on their raft? How was it to make hard or easy? Did you try any other way of making a raft? Was this easier?
Children to take their raft home to try out in the bath or paddling pool. If they are going to a river with it then talk about the safety aspects of open bodies of water.
