What is Diwali?
Diwali is the five-day festival of lights, celebrated by millions of Hindus, Sikhs and Jains across the world. Diwali, which for some also coincides with harvest and new year celebrations, is a festival of new beginnings and the triumph of good over evil, and light over darkness.
The date of the festival is calculated according to the position of the moon and the Hindu lunar calendar, and is usually in October or November.

Mix everything together to make a dough.
I used about half a cup for each measure and this made enough salt dough for two divas. I divided the dough into two and made it into a ball. Then we flattened the balls and used our fingers to mould them into a small bowl. I pinched at one side to make a spout. They can be left to air dry naturally for a couple of days, or cooked at a low heat in the oven (about 100 degrees) for an hour or so, just keep an eye on them so that they don't burn.

When fully dry, we painted them. They can be any colour that you like, as long as it is nice and bright. When the paint was dry we covered them in glue and added plenty of glitter and sequins.

Paper Diyas

We cut 2-inch strips from an A4 sheet of paper. We cut strips along the shorter edge.

Start making small accordion style folds along its longer edge.

We cut out a 3-inch strip from our paper tape and stuck half of the tape on one side. Carefully bring the other end together and stick the two ends together as shown. Fold the excess tape at the back.

Repeat the same step to make multi-coloured Diya shaped folds. You could make them all in one colour or two tones.

Cut out a flame shape piece from orange paper (or colour in some white paper). You could use any colour; gold would look awesome. We added some accents to it with a red marker and some glitter.
