Instructions

Leader Preparation
This activity requires the ‘Pirate Face’ and ‘Hat’ templates to be cut out before the session. You will need to purchase the magnetic strips and source pieces of material, wool etc to decorate the pirate.

1) What does a pirate look like? Answers may be mean, wears a hat, has an earring, has a beard.
2) How does a pirate talk? A typical pirate greeting is ‘Ahoy’. Spend some time practicing saying this? What other words/phrases are pirates known to say? Share the ‘Did You Know?’ facts.
3) Give each child a jam jar lid/card shape, and a pirate face template. Colour in the pirate face and glue to the inside of the jam jar lid/card shape, alternatively use a close-up face photo of the child or allow them to draw their own face.
4) Now it’s time to think about accessorising your pirate. What will they need – hair, beard, moustache, earring, parrot, scarf? Let the children think of their own ideas.
5) Children can either draw or use the resources available to create the features of their pirate, ensuring everything is glued firmly in place. Whilst the children are creating their pirates encourage them to talk like a pirate, using the phrases in the ‘Did You Know?’ section.
6) To finish off your magnet securely stick a strip of magnetic tape to the back of your pirate.
