Instructions
1) Ask the group if they know what all vegetables come from originally? Everything starts as a tiny little seed that is carefully placed in the ground and then looked after, in the hope that one day it will become a healthy vegetable. How we plant these seeds matter to how healthy the vegetable will be at the end of the harvest.
2) Jesus told a story about the importance of planting seeds and how different types of soil could have a big impact on how those plants grew. Let’s find out more!
3) Start by watching the video of ‘The Parable of the Farmer and the Seeds’ by Saddleback Kids, or read about it in a Children’s Bible in Matthew 13.
4) After watching the video, ask the group if they can remember what Jesus said the different soils represented?
5) What did the seeds landing in the rocky ground represent? Sometimes we hear what God has got to say to us, but we don’t put it into action. This is like the seeds that fell on the rocky ground. They started to grow, but because they didn’t have good roots, they were soon destroyed.
6) What did the seeds landing on the good ground represent? These seeds showed us how when we listen to God and follow his instructions wisely, our seeds will grow well, and we will be rewarded.
7) Let’s explore this more by playing a game.
8) Place a soil sign in each corner of the meeting space. As a group move to each corner to become familiar with the soil picture and where each soil is.
9) Explain you are going to ask a question about the video. The answer each time will be one of these soils. Children should run to the soil corner they think is the answer. The children that are in the correct corner receive a ‘seed’ (i.e. counter, pompom, small sweet etc).
10) Use the first question as a practice. Continue asking the questions one at a time allowing the group to choose an answer. Award a seed to those with the correct answer. The child/children that have the most seeds at the end are the winners.
11) End the session with a prayer: “We know at times Lord that we can be like the hard soil, not listening to you, and at times we can be like the stony and thorny soils hearing you but then forgetting you. Help us Lord to be more like the good soil, by listening to you and following you. Amen.”
