Resources

Dry flour or wet sand/soil
Tray
Sheet/towel
Spade/rake
Large box/bag
Cloth for wiping

Instructions

Leader Preparation
A leader will need to source a suitable tray for this activity and some flour/sand/soil.

1) The children should each remove one shoe, placing it in a large box, before sitting around the tray with a 2cm depth of flour, soil or sand in.
2) A leader should choose a detective who leaves the room ensuring they cannot see or hear inside the room.
3) A ‘criminal’ should then be chosen who takes their shoe from the box, firmly placing it in the flour/sand/soil, leaving a clear footprint. The shoe may need wiping, before returning to the box and sitting back in their place.
4) The detective should then be called back in and can examine the footprint in the tray for 30 seconds, before the tray should be covered up with a tea towel or cloth.
5) They should them take a look at all the shoes of the group that are being worn, to try to match the footprint in the tray with the markings that can be seen on the bottom of everyone’s shoes.
6) The detective has two chances to match the footprint. If successful they choose the next detective and criminal. If unsuccessful the criminal becomes the detective, and a leader chooses the new criminal.
7) Ensure the flour is smoothed down with the spade/rake before a new footprint is made.
