Instructions
Leader Preparation
This activity will require a leader to download the ‘Holy Squiggles’ PowerPoint and display this using a projector or large TV.
Holy Squiggles Bible Quiz
1) Download and display the ‘Holy Squiggles’ PowerPoint. This contains 10 Holy Squiggles to decode, with answers showing on the next slide.
2) Explain to the group that each slide will show a small number of doodled images. Their job is to try and use these images to piece together a Bible verse. The first couple of slides in the PowerPoint help to explain this and provides an example for the group to look at.
3) Now divide the room into two groups. Show the first ‘Holy Squiggle’ and they should then race each other to guess the answer correctly.
4) If the guess is incorrect or incomplete, the other team can try to solve it instead.
5) Go through all 10 of the Holy Squiggles, trying to decode each one.
6) At the end of the quiz, go through the squiggles. Which team scored the most points? Were there any ridiculous guesses along the way?!
Holy Squiggles Charades
Having completed the ‘Holy Squiggles Bible Quiz’, now take the activity further by playing a game of charades, using the squiggles as clues.
1) Turn off or disconnect the projector and hide your laptop screen from the group.
2) Choose one member of each team to act. One team plays at a time.
3) Show the actor one of the Holy Squiggles from the quiz and the related answer. They must then act the words/pictures without speaking.
4) Only their team can guess. If the team manage to guess all the words correctly, they win 5 bonus points!
Holy Squiggles ‘Doodle Prayers’
1) Print and cut up the ‘Bible Verses & Questions’.
2) Hand out pencils/pens and paper and then let the children choose one of the Bible verses each.
3) Leave a period of quiet for them to doodle a verse or a prayer to God, inspired by some of the images and doodles from our Holy Squiggles quiz earlier.
Holy Squiggles Questions
1) Each of the Bible verses from the prayer activity has 1-3 questions to help children to dive a little deeper into that verse.
2) Spend time as a group asking some or all of these questions and let the children explore their thoughts and feelings around that Bible verse. Encourage fun and curiosity as opposed to trying to get to a ‘right answer’.
