Description

This activity is all about actions and reactions and is a fun way to remind everyone that our actions can have an effect on those around us.

Resources

Yellow Card (Scouts’ code of practice)

Instructions

Part 1: Oh No! (Negative Chain Reaction)

• Show and briefly explain the Yellow Card, emphasizing safety and kindness online and offline.
• Explain that unkind words or actions can start a negative chain reaction.
• Start with a scenario (e.g., “Someone made a mean comment online”), and after each person’s reaction, the group shouts “Oh no!”
• After each statement, the player runs around the circle while others chant “Oh” until they sit, finishing with “No!”
• Continue the chain around the circle, and when it returns to the first person, they say, “And all because someone was unkind in the first place!”

Example “Oh No!” Statements:

• “I shouted at my mam (Oh no!).”
• “She trod on the cat’s tail (Oh no!).”
• “The cat scratched my dad (Oh no!).”

Part 2: Hooray! (Positive Chain Reaction)

• Now create a positive chain reaction where each action leads to something good.
• After each statement, the group shouts “Hooray!” while the player runs around the circle.
• End with, “And all because someone was kind in the first place!”

Example “Hooray!” Statements:

• “My friend thanked me for their birthday card (Hooray!).”
• “I smiled at my neighbour (Hooray!).”

Part 3: Break the Chain (Optional)

• Discuss how negative actions lead to more negativity, but positive reactions can break the chain.
• Play one more round, starting with a negative statement, but encourage positive reactions.
• Continue with the running and chanting format as before.

Closing Remarks:

• Reflect on how actions create ripple effects, both online and offline, using the optional pebble demonstration.
• Remind everyone to aim for “hooray” moments and to tell a trusted adult if they feel uncomfortable online.
• Ask each person to think of a trusted adult they could talk to if needed.
