Description

This activity is to run a Teamwork skills training session to prepare patrols for an incident night hike.

You will need to set up 2 or 3 incident bases which the patrols can rotate around. If an incident base would take 10-15 minutes to complete on the actual event, for this session allow almost twice as long per base.

Instructions

Explain the format of the session to the YP, emphasising that building their ability to work as a team is more important than winning every single time.

Choose 3 leaderships/team skills they will be working on. If you are able to write these on a whiteboard that might help. Suggested skills could include:
- the PL acting as a guide rather than a 'do-er'. So PL not allowed to touch anything, can only use their voice to coach and help others
- getting in the habit of planning as a team before starting anything
- taking time to reflect after every activity, see how they can do better and improve next time
- avoiding anger and blame as these do not make teams get better next time

Explain that at each base they will follow the following format:
- leader explanation
- 3 minutes to plan how they will do the base
- 10 minutes to try it
- a break to discuss what worked well and what didn't (both in terms of the activity itself, and how they worked as a team)
- try again and DO BETTER

Supervising leaders to observe teamwork and behaviours and give diplomatic feedback as needed.
