Grid references scavenger hunt
Leader to share screen and start slideshow
Read out the slides
Cubs to go and find the item they think it is and hold it up to the camera (you can hold up your own when they are all off the screen)
Re-cap how to read references if needed
Battleships
Assign other leaders as co-hosts (especially if they will be sharing their screen)
Make sure someone with host/co-host role stays in the main room during Battleships game to allow/reassign anyone who joins/drops out of the meeting
Assign an adult in each team to make a note of ship locations, shots fired, hits, and misses, in case meeting unexpectedly closes
Split the group into 2 teams (use breakout rooms)
Each team needs to be able to see the Battleships grids spreadsheet, so a Leader to share their screen showing the grids (we had one Leader signed in twice of different devices, one device in each breakout room, sharing the grid on both screens)
If you have Cubs who need the Lead part of the Team Leaders Challenge, assign them into different teams and ask them if they want to be the Team Leader.
Instructions for Cubs (also on the spreadsheet)
(Adult to make a note of all the ref played and the hits/misses in case of challenge)
Agree a team leader and Team Leader to inform the Grand Admiral using the Chat (Leader sharing the grid). The Grand Admiral will only accept grid references from the the Team Leader
Team Leader to click on Annotate to open the toolbar so they can record the bomb drops using the stamps
Agree with your team your ship placements and mark these on the right hand grid (use the Star stamp); ships cannot overlap or go diagonally, they must be fully on the grid, and must be the same size as the templates (you get 1 of each ship)
When your team is ready and has agreed the grid reference for the first bomb, the team leader needs to submit the grid reference to the Grand Admiral using the chat
Once the first bomb has been dropped by both teams, you will then have 30 seconds to submit your next shot to the Grand Admiral
The grid reference you submit to the Grand Admiral must be the number at the bottom, then, the number at the side. So, each square has a 4 figure grid reference, for example: 5496
You must inform the Grand Admiral in the Chat if it is a hit or miss
The other team will inform the Grand Admiral if your bomb hit or missed their ships
The left grid is that of your opponent; mark on there the hits and misses for the bombs you have dropped (use the Tick and Cross stamps)
Mark on your own grid (the one that has your ships on) where your opponents have dropped their bombs
If a hit is the last one possible on a ship you need to say “you sank our...[name of ship]”
The game ends when one of the teams has lost all their ships (or when we run out of time!)
