Week 1
Activity: Minesweeper
Each team needs:
Blank grid sheets
Clipboard
Pen/pencil
Leader needs:
Set of mine maps
- 4 compass points (N, E, S, W movements only)
- 8 compass points (can move diagonally)
Large grid on floor (tape)
Mark N, E, S, W on walls (BIG)
Pen
Paper

Activity: Orientating a map
Each pair needs:
OS map extract
Compass
Game: Map symbol relay
Each team needs:
OS map key
Set of symbol cards
Leader needs:
Set of symbol cards with answers
Paper and pen for scoring
Week 2
Activity: Complete the map (~1 hour)
Each team needs:
Blank map of Kennington showing locations of and unlabelled OS symbols of: School, Church, Phone, Pub, Post Office (Hut marked and labeled as starting point)

Game: Battleships (~30 mins)
Each pair needs:

Red whiteboard pens (‘hit’)
Green whiteboard pens (‘miss’)

Week 1
Activity: Minesweeper (~1 hour)
Instructions
Preparations before arrival
Grid on floor
N, E, S, W on walls
Running activity
Each team has their own entrance to the minefield (in the corners)
Cubs can only call out compass points (start with the 4 points then move on to 8)
Cubs can only move their player one square at a time; each Cub should get a go at being player and marking out the map
If the player lands on a mine, the Leader tells them and everyone makes explosion noise
Cubs need to mark on their blank map where the mines are to find a safe path to the exit
When the player explodes their turn is over and the next Cub enters the minefield from the beginning, being directed by the others in their team
When leader is happy they understand the 4 compass points, or they have got a player through the minefield safely, then they can move on to round 2 (8 compass points)
Activity: Orientating a map (~10 mins)
Instructions
Explain that Cubs need to line up the compass and the map all to north so they know which way they’re going
Game: Map symbol relay (~15 mins)
Instructions
Leader calls out name of symbol (hiding picture)
Cubs look up symbol on OS map key and find the correct symbol card
1 Cub from each team brings up the card
1st team to bring up correct card gets a point
Reveal correct answer to Pack when the first correct card is presented
Activity: Complete the map (~1 hour)
Instructions
Cubs in to pairs
Pairs given equipment
Cubs divided into 2 groups and assigned 2 Leaders
Cubs to locate the Hut and walk from the Hut to Tandem, back to the School and back to the Hut
Label roads they pass them and input symbols (they won’t get them all and that’s ok!)
Be back at the Hut to start game half an hour before flagdown.
Game: Battleships (~30 mins)
Instructions
Cub pairs given equipment
Each pair given an opponent pair (so they are in 4s)
Explain:
Put your ships on the bottom grid; ships cannot overlap or go diagonally, and must be fully on the grid
Take it in turns to pick a square to drop a bomb on your opponents’ grid
To drop a bomb, you have to pick a square, and follow the grid down and read out the number at the bottom, then, follow the grid to the side and read out the second number. So, each square has a 4 figure grid reference, for example: 54 97
The other team needs to say if your bomb hit or missed their ships
The top grid is that of your opponent; mark on there the hits and misses for the bombs you have dropped
Mark on your own grid (the one that has your ships on) where your opponents have dropped their bombs
If a hit is the last one possible on a ship you need to say “you sank my...”
The game ends when one of the teams has lost all their ships (or when we run out of time!)
