Background
Why do we celebrate Burns Night on January 25? This was Robert Burns' birthday.
Who was Robert Burns? As William Shakespeare is England's national bard, it’s the same with Robert Burns and Scotland.

The first Burns supper was held in 1801 and in the 200+ years since then new traditions have been added but the sentiment remains the same: to pay tribute to our national poet.

Gurning - Funny faces
Camera (and any necessary cables)
Laptop (and any necessary cables)
Frame/Life buoy

On arrival, everyone (including Leaders) put their heads through the frame and pull a funny face while a photo is taken.

Have someone put photos on the laptop while the games are being played.

(Photos to be shown when the YPs are eating later.)

Each vote = 1 point.

Highland games
Assign leaders to a Six. Work in Sixes - someone to keep score.

Caber run
Cones (3 or 4 cones per team)
Large cardboard tubes (cabers)

3 or 4 cones per team spaced from startline to the other end of the hall.

Carrying the caber with both hands cradled underneath with arms straight down so the caber is upright, run around the far cone and back, but each time you come to another cone you need to run around the cone (not just stepping over it).

Sit down when done.

If you have small teams (~3) do this twice.

3 points for the winner, 2 points for 2nd place, 1 point for 3rd place.

Caber toss (if not raining)
Large cardboard tubes (cabers)
Long tape measure

Go out into car park and each person tosses the caber. Hold at the bottom with both hands and launch.
Forwards
Backwards

If you have small teams (~3) do this twice.

Get score keepers to watch their own teams’ caber and to stand where it first hits the ground. Measure the distance of the first hit - measure in a straight line from the standing line to the nearest hit point (not from the thrower).

1 point per foot/metre.

Javelin throw
Pool noodles (javelins)
Long tape measure

Stand at one end of the hall and throw the javelin as far as possible (overarm).

If you have small teams (~3) do this twice.

Get score keepers to watch their own teams’ caber and to stand where it first hits the ground. Measure the distance of the first hit - measure in a straight line from the standing line to the nearest hit point (not from the thrower).

1 point per foot/metre.

Weight over the bar
Tables (1 per team)
Beanbags (3 per team)

3 goes per person.

Set tables down the hall, YP need to be sat on floor ~3m away (bums on floor not sitting on feet). Throw beanbags, underarm, over the table. Tables should be moved for each round:
Side on
Lengthways

1 point per beanbag clean over. No points if it touches the table or is thrown to the side so had no chance of hitting the table.

If you have small teams (~3) do each round twice.

Bonus round
Set tables on the other side of the hall to the YPs, who need to be sat on floor (bums on floor not sitting on feet). Throw beanbags, underarm, onto the table.

1 point per beanbag that lands and stays on the table, if it lands then is knocked off by another bag it still counts. No points if the bag touches something else before landing on the table.

If you have small teams (~3) do this twice.

Leave tables up for eating off and for scoring gurning competition.

Serving the haggis
Haggis is traditionally served on Burns Night because it was a favourite of Robert Burns. He liked it so much that he wrote a poem to celebrate his appreciation of the Haggis.

Read Address to the Haggis (scottish accent) while playing music as the haggis is brought in on a ‘silver platter’ (or plate covered with foil). Could also serve from kitchen.

Serve haggis with Irn Bru, they can have shortbread after.

While they are eating
Set up the projector and computer with gurning photos.

Ask the score keepers to add up scores so far.
When they have finished eating
Clean up (washing up could be done while gurning scoring is being done).

Give paper and pen/pencil to each team.

Show gurning photos up on projector screen and ask YPs to write down person’s name and team, then score out of 5 (5 being the best). They only give scores to those not in their team.

Get the YP to add up the scores they have awarded per team. and get the score keepers to go round and add these to their scores and report totals to Leader.

Put tables away and get ready for flag down/game.

Announce scores when they are gathered for flag down.

Games
The floor is lava
Carpet tiles (1 per person)

Work together to get everyone across the lava stepping only on the tiles; if you step off start again.
