Originally planned for Beavers but easily adapted/suitable for cubs.

Paper Plane Derby

Resources

Paper airplane instructions (have different ones if you can)
Paper for planes (A4)
Paper for bookmarks (A4 into 3)
Colouring pens/pencils
Tables
Hoop (or use rafters)
Chairs (use as targets)
Letters and phonetic word endings (e.g. ‘T’, ‘ango’ to make Tango)

Instructions

Phonetics
Go thought the alphabet (they might know some)
Split into lodges (need tables)
Give a bookmark to each person
Give letters and phonetic word endings to each lodge
They need to match up the letters with the correct word endings (adults to check/help)
They have to write their names down the side of their bookmark

Write the phonetic word next to each letter of their name, e.g. ‘Bagheera’ would be:

A lpha
G olf
H otel
E cho
E cho
R omeo
A lpha


Paper Plane Derby
Give paper plane instructions to each lodge.

Ask them to follow instructions to fold, colour, modify the airplanes

Standing at one end of the hall, fly them and compare:
Distance
Trough hoop/rafters
Stays in the air longest
Land on a target (chair)
Hit a target


Game
Port, Stern, Starboard, Bow
Introduce Aircraft Carrier - arms out and swoosh around like a plane
