Scrap fabric
Sewing needles - at least 1 per person, ideally 2
Scissors
Thread
Table
Chairs
Bag for rubbish
Sew a button onto a scrap bit of felt.
Thread your needle
Tie a knot in the end (wrap around a finger at least 3 times, then roll the loops off and rub between fingers, and pull tight)
From the back of the fabric, push the needle through where you want your button
Push needle back through the fabric from front to back a few millimeters away, and repeat to create a small cross where your button will go
Now hold the button in place and put the needle across the middle of it - this needle will will make the threads loose when you remove it allowing for a button hole to go over the button (if you didn’t have a space then the button would be too tight to the fabric)
Include the button in your stitches using the holes each time and crossing over the needle you are holding over it, if your button has 4 holes, sew in a cross as before, alternating which holes you use do this about 6 times, ending with the needle coming out of the back of the fabric
Remove the spacer needle
Push you sewing needle front he back of the fabric to the front under the button (not through the holes)
Wrap the thread between the button and fabric about 6 times
Push the needle back through to the back of the fabric (do not go though the button)
Tie at least 3 knots close to the fabric to finish - ideally pick up a tiny piece of fabric from the back with the needle to create a loop in the thread, take your needle through the loop before pulling tight (do this at least 3 times)
