Activities
Snowball Crawl (Cabbage Crawl - St Patrick’s Day)
Resources
One football (head of cabbage) per team
Players must get down on their hands and knees and push their ‘head of cabbage’ to the other side of the room and back again using just their head. The first team to have everyone back wins.
Hot Snowball (Hot potato - St Patrick’s Day)
Resources
Bean Bags (or indoor snowballs)
Version 1
Have the players sit in a circle.
One player sits in the middle of the circle; this player is the leprechaun.
The leprechaun starts the game by throwing a "potato" to one of the players in the circle.
The leprechaun then closes their eyes and keeps them closed while the potato is passed among the players in the circle.
After the potato has been passed for a while, the leprechaun shouts a colour of the rainbow.
The player holding the potato at that moment leaves the circle and is out of the game.
Play continues until only one player is left in the circle.
That player is the winner and gets to be the leprechaun for the next game.
Keep playing until each player has had a turn as the leprechaun
Rules
If someone throws the potato so the next person can’t catch it and a colour is called the thrower is out
If the potato is mid air when a colour is called no one is out
Version 2
Each person runs up the hall tossing the ‘potato’, you cannot have it in your hands for more than a second before you have to toss it in the air. There and back and toss it to the next member.
Musical statues/chairs
Resources
Music
Speaker
Chairs
Musical statues
Dancing like elves to Christmas music. Person spotting the statues is the woken child.
Musical chairs
Same as usual rules, just with Christmas music.
Splat
The whole unit stands in a circle with one person, ‘Santa’ standing in the middle (could be a leader).
Santa takes a turn by pointing at someone in the circle and shouting ‘ELF’.
The ‘elf’ must then crouch down immediately to avoid being ‘hit’.
The two people either side of the ‘elf’ must then defend themselves by turning towards each other with their arms up crossed and shout ‘Christmas’ before the other.
The person who shouts ‘Christmas’ last is then out and must sit down in the circle.
If the ‘elf’ fails to crouch down in time, they are then out.
Continue until there are 2 players left in the circle.
They must then stand back to back and on the count of 3 defend themselves in the same way as before.
The winner is the last person standing!
Snack race
Resources
Large chocolate bar per 8-10 YPs
Eating knife per 8-10 YPs
Eating fork per 8-10 YPs
Plate per 8-10 YPs
Hat per 8-10 YPs
Gloves per 8-10 YPs
Scalf per 8-10 YPs
Dice per 8-10 YPs
Divide YPs into groups of 8–10 and get each group to sit in a circle. In the middle of the circle place the chocolate bar (opened) on the plate with the knife and fork, the hat, scarf, and gloves next to it.
YPs may want to remove any headgear they have on before the game starts.
YPs roll the dice to the next person in the circle; if they roll a 6 they have to put on the hat, scalf, and gloves and use the knife and fork to cut a single piece of chocolate off the bar and eat it before the next person rolls a 6 and takes over.
