Activity - Discussion (~20mins)
What and Why
Ask the Cubs:
What is special about today - it’s St Andrew’s Day
What country in the UK is he patron saint of - Scotland
When Andrew was made the patron saint of Scotland (who gets closest) - 1320

Read: St Andrew was selected as Scotland’s patron saint in 1320 when Scotland made an appeal to the Pope for protection against English conquest (naughty English). He was seen as a suitable choice due to his position as the brother of St Peter.

Who was St Peter? He was one of Jesus’s disciples and the founder of the church

Read: There are a number of myths and legends used to justify Andrew’s special place in Scottish history. One such story states that the Scots are descendants of the ancient Scythians who resided in what is now Romania and Bulgaria. There it is said that Andrew the Apostle converted the early Scots to Christianity before they migrated to the British Isles.

Another story is that Andrew, who was known for wandering far and wide before his crucifixion, traveled as far North as Scotland to establish a church in Fife.

Has anyone been to Fife?
Does anyone know where Fife is? Point to it on a map if you have one. It is a county in Scotland just above Edinburgh on the west coast. There is even a seaside town in Fife called St Andrew’s.

Read: So we know St Andrew is the Patron saint of Scotland, but he’s also patron saint of some other countries.

Does anyone know what countries? Barbados, Romania, Ukraine, and Russia

Parts of the Union Flag
Does anyone know the different parts of the flag that make up the Union? Point out the different pieces to see if they can say the saint and the country.

Does anyone know why Wales isn’t incorporated into the Union flag? As Wales is not a kingdom but a principality (a state ruled by a Prince not a King or Queen) the people in charge at the time decided it should not be included on the flag.
Does anyone know when St Andrew’s flag was combined with St George’s flag to create the first version of the Union Flag? 1606
Does anyone know when St Patrick’s flag was incorporated to create the current version of the Union Flag? 1801
Does anyone know how you can tell if the flag is the right way up? St. Andrew's is on the right in every quarter (as you turn the flag clockwise) due to a rule of heraldry giving Scotland a position of precedence (on the right) over Northern Ireland as the more senior member of the United Kingdom.
If you see the flag deliberately being flown upside down, what does that mean? To deliberately fly the flag upside down is a signal indicating a situation of 'DISTRESS'.

Thistle Award
In Scotland they have special awards in Beavers and Cubs called Thistle Awards (show them the badges); they can have a look at the badge requirements later if they want to find out more.

Activity - Comics (~30-45 mins)
Draw a short comic that incorporates at least 3 of the things on the All Things Scottish sheets. Nothing rude or insulting. They need to put their names on the page and can put them on the noticeboard at the end.

When they have finished (or time has run out) each Cub should read out their comic or give a quick summary of what it’s about.

Game - Dogs in the Bogs
Prep
Spread the rope (or tape) across the playing area.

Description
Show the group the space that they will be using for the game.
They should nominate two or three people to be bogs. The bogs must stay on the line of tape or string, keeping one foot on the line at all times, though they may move up and down the line. There should be room between the bogs for a person to move from one end of the playing space to the other without being touched.
Explain that a Scottish terrier, or ‘Scottie,’ is a popular breed of dog from Scotland. They are small and have short legs, meaning they must take care near bogs in case they get stuck! The rest of the group are Scottish terriers and must pass the bogs without being touched. When they reach one side, they should try and cross back to the other side.
A bog can stick a Scottish terrier in place by touching them once as they are passing.
A Scottish terrier who gets touched must stand still with their arms out and bark for help. Scottish terriers can free their stuck fellows by touching one of their hands.
As you play, allow the Scottish terriers time to rest on one or the other side of the room, as and when they need to.
Play until you run out of time or until all of the Scottish terriers have been stuck.
