Instructions
Use the attached pack to lead the activity. Ideal to split Mindfulness and Mental First Aid into two bases with a smaller number of young people to provoke discussion.
MENTAL HEALTH FIRST AID BASE (20 mins)
Ask the Scouts questions:
- What might a friend be going through in their lives that could affect their mental health?
- What are the signs that a friend might be having problems?
- Use the deck to fill in any gaps.
- Run through 10 tips on how Scouts could support their friends -
- Ask scout to play back the 10 to see if how many they remember
- Go through the 5 point plan (below) and test to make sure they remember
- Pick up any remaining questions at the end
The Scouts Action Plan:
1. Noticing that a friend is not coping with how they are feeling
2. Asking them if they are Okay and listening to them
3. Help them talk through their own solutions
4. Help them to be confident to ask an adult for help if needed
5. Being there for them as a friend and showing you care
MINDFULNESS FOR SCOUTS BASE (20 mins)
Introduce the concepts of Sonder and Socha by playing videos - Ask scouts what they think?
Talk about controlling the way you think
Ask scouts to come up with ways to keep mentally fit - fill in any gaps from slide
Discuss the concept of a own thoughts mind map and get them each to fill one in,
Each scout should sit separately with no names recorded on the sheet so they knew other scouts would not see their thoughts unless they share them
We made this semi anonymous by numbering the sheets (with a record of who had what number that they knew) and collecting in at the end,
You then have the option of running a further session for issues raised or picking up directly with individual scouts on anything urgent.
Close off with any questions raised (5 mins)
