Activities to help the Cubs learn about the Day of the Dead

Resources

- White Balloons
- Markers
- White paper/card
- Red paper/card
- Yellow tissue paper
- Green pipe cleaners

Instructions

Use the beginning of the session to introduce and talk about the Day of The Dead.

Split the cubs into groups and rotate around the activities.

Activity 1- Balloon Skulls:
- Blow up the white balloons
- The Cubs should draw on the balloons to create their own Calacas (sugar skulls)
- Print off examples so the cubs can get some inspiration

Activity 2- Marigolds:
- 1 sheet of yellow tissue paper and 2 green pipe cleaners per cub
- Cut the tissue paper in half and keep cutting in half until you have 8 sheets of paper
- Stack 4 sheets of paper and pleat the paper in an accordion fold
- Cut the end into a half-circle
- Wrap the pipe cleaner around the middle to hold the paper in place
- Fan out the paper and separate the rest of the paper layers
- Repeat with the other stack

Activity 3- Skull Wreaths
- Fold a piece of paper in half and then half again
- Unfold once and then fold the two halves upwards to create a heart shape then fold in half again
- Cut the open end into a half-circle
- Draw and cut out a half skull, using a hole punch to create the eyes
- Unfold to see the full design
- Cut the red card into small strips and roll up to create roses
- Stick these onto the heads of the skulls and decorate

Alternative Activity- Shell Bracelets
- Using elastic thread, shells and beads, create a bracelet that can make noice when shaken or when dancing
