Report Copyright Infringement View in OSM UK
Description
Tent pitching as a teamwork challenge.
Please note that not all of the badge credits will be appropriate for your session, it depends on the emphasis you choose to put on each aspect of the challenge.
Resources
Materials: deck of playing cards, hike tent, a supply of blindfolds
Optional BUT HIGHLY RECOMMENDED: Setup for sharing a video of the 'perfect' way to pitch the exact model of tent you are looking to pitch.
Optional: Ability to record the process and review/analyse it afterwards
Instructions
Put up a hike tent, working as a team, with some randomly-assigned hindrances
– Method: Shuffle a normal 52 playing card pack.
Each Scout takes a card from the pack which denotes which ability restriction they will have:
* Clubs = not able to use their legs/walk around, but can use hands/voice and can be piggy backed into a location to be more useful
* Spades = not able to use their arms/hands to point, but can walk around
* Hearts = not able to speak
* Diamonds = not able to see (blindfold on)
While sticking to the ability restrictions they each have, each patrol is instructed to pitch the tent, working together and helping one another.
Leaders to offer support and monitor for frustrations, risk of damage to tents if Scouts being silly.
Try to make time for debrief/lessons learned at the end. Things that have been useful to focus on:
-how included the scout felt with their disability
-how frustrated they were with other scouts not "using" them in a way they were able even with their disability
-how this might translate into real life for people with physical disabilities
Make sure you count the cards back in at the end of each go as the scouts putting them in their pocket rate is high!
