Expedition equipment - part 1
Report Copyright Infringement View in OSM UK
Description
To understand what is essential equipment for a two day expedition, what is nice-to-have and to look at the different variants of each. Scouts should understand that when they select their kit, they need to consider the size and weight of their rucksack - it is recommended that a rucksack weighs no more than 25% of the body weight of the person carrying it.
In the UK, an average 10 year old weighs 32kg
In the UK, an average 12 year old weighs 39kg.
In the UK, an average 14 year old weighs 49kg
Resources
Example kit list (DofE expedition kit list is a good starter)
Examples of different variations of some items to consider and discuss (ie. different types of stove, different types of sleeping bag/mat, different types of torch, different types of food)
Some examples of bags, ie. an expedition rucksack compared to a holdall or suitcase
A rucksack with weights inside so the Scouts can feel the maximum target weight for each age group detailed above
Instructions
Introduce the session purpose as trying to define what essentials need to be taken on an expedition. Explain that a person should only carry up to 25% of their own body weight and that for an average UK 12 year old, that should be rucksack weighing about 10kg. Let each Scout feel the 10kg rucksack to get a feel for what this means. Then ask for a volunteer to wear the rucksack for the rest of the session - they may not remove the rucksack or sit down (use your common sense here - no injuries please).
Use the envelopes to arrange the items into three groups - personal essentials, group essentials and non-essentials. Are there any essentials missing? If so use the blank slips of paper to write add your own.
Compare the sorted groups to the DofE lists
Look at and discuss the examples of kit on show and the merits of each example. What would make good kit for an expedition vs good kit for a static camp?
What is important to consider when selecting personal equipment? Reliability, size, weight, cost etc..
Discuss the difference between personal kit and group kit and how the group kit could be spread across the group to share the load.
Finally return to the Scout wearing the 10kg rucksack and ask them to explain to the group how it feels to carry it for the time the session has run and how it may feel for a 2 day expedition.
