Rescue Action Activity
Report Copyright Infringement View in OSM UK
Description
Scouts will learn and practice basic rescue skills through a fun and engaging scenario-based activity.
Resources
- Blankets or mats for transporting
- Markers or cone for an area's boundary to represent the 'wilderness'
- First aid kit for demonstration purposes
Instructions
1. Set the Scene: Explain to Scouts that they are surrounded by a wilderness area and a fellow Scout has encountered an emergency (e.g., has fallen and cannot move).
2. Divide into Teams: Split Scouts into small teams of 4-5.
3. Assign Roles: Each team should include:
- A rescuer
- A first aider
- A communicator (to convey instructions)
- Other team members to assist
4. Initial Assessment: Each team approaches the 'victim' (a designated Scout lying on the ground). The first aider will assess the situation as per basic first aid principles (checking responsiveness, breathing).
5. Rescue Techniques: The team must work together to safely rescue the 'victim,' using items available in their surroundings or provided by the leader (such as a blanket or rope) to transport them. They should practise using a carry technique (like a fireman’s carry or a stretcher) if suitable.
6. Wrap Up: After 15 minutes, gather everyone and ask each team to share what techniques they used and what challenges they faced during the exercise.
