Description

Beavers make musical shakers, learn about each other’s musical preferences, what instruments they are learning, play a rhythm game to learn more about each other and use the shakers to sing we will rock you.

Resources

Tape (decorative ideally, plain is fine)
Kitchen roll tubes 1 for every two Beavers (ideally not toilet roll tubes for hygiene reasons)
Paper (ideally coloured, enough for an A4 page each)
Rice (enough for a tablespoon for each Beaver)
Scissors
Felt top pens
Stickers (optional)

Instructions

Today we will be covering part of the musician badge. Some of our older Beavers will have already taken part in musical performances such as our Christmas carols, at Camp or during our visit from Stagecoach. For them, this covers the rest of the badge requirements. If you are a newer Beaver you can complete the rest of the badge later this year by getting involved in one of those activities.

Today we will start by working in our lodges and you’ll talk about how you practice your musical skills, be it singing, drumming or learning an instrument. At the same time you’ll be making one of these (show shaker made beforehand) which we can use as a percussion instrument. Once you are finished we’ll come back together as a group and have a go at using them. Any questions?

Break out into lodges. Give 15 minutes.

Alternatively, each Beaver cuts out 2 circles of paper per about five centimetres in diameter larger than the ends of the kitchen roll tubes (cut in half across the middle so each tube can be used for two shakers). Use the tape to attach one to an end of the tube. Pour in about one tablespoon of rice. Seal the other end with the other circle of paper and tape. Then have the Beavers decorate the middle of the roll.

While they are building their shaker, ask them each to each share:

- what musical instrument they are learning, and if none, whether they use drums at school or do any singing
- Ask what they do to practice and get better at the instrument or singing
- Ask them what music they most like to listen to

Once everyone has built their shaker (including leaders!) get everyone sitting in a big circle and then do the rhythm game (see YouTube link below).

In case the link is broken, here are written instructions:

Sit all Beavers in a circle with the leaders also sitting down as part of the circle. Try and sit a volunteer or leader to the left of the leader running this activity. Say we are going to do a rhythm game a learn a little more about each other. Say we are going to start by making a simple four beat rhythm of shake, shake, wait, wait. Repeat this several times and then ask everyone to join in when they are ready. Once you have a consistent rhythm going, say we are going to go round the circle starting with me and following to my left (look left to avoid confusion) and during the wait part of the beat we’ll say our first name. Proceed around the circle, then repeat with favourite colour and then favourite sport.

After the third circuit is complete get everyone to stand up and say we’re going to do a new rhythm and a song now. Get them to copy you as you do the rhythm from Queen’s we will rock you (stamp, stamp, shake). Once the beat is established you sing the first verse and get everyone to join for the chorus. Work your way through the song and then give yourselves a round of applause and hand out musician badges as appropriate.

Here’s a simple set of leader instructions you can use for a Beaver/Cubs Musicians Badge Night based on the rhythm game in the video and linked activity plan.

Musician Badge Night – Rhythm Game Activity
We are going to learn about rhythm and keeping a beat, then play a musical rhythm game together.

Equipment Needed
* Shakers, drums, or homemade percussion instruments (rice in tubes/bottles works well)
* Chairs or space to sit in a circle
* Optional: speaker for music

Part 1 – Introduction (5 mins)
“Tonight we are working towards our Musician Badge. We are going to:
* learn about rhythm and beat,
* play musical games,
* use percussion instruments,
* and perform together as a group.”

Explain:
Beat= the steady pulse in music.
Rhythm = the pattern played over the beat.

Part 2 – Warm-Up Rhythm (5 mins)
Sit everyone in a large circle.
Leader demonstrates: Shake – Shake – Rest or tap on thighs twice and rest

Count aloud:
1 – 2 – 3
Everyone copies until the rhythm is steady.
Encourage:
* listening carefully,
* keeping together,
* staying on the beat.

# Part 3 – Name Rhythm Game (10 mins)

Keep the same rhythm going.

During the “rest” section, each child says:

* their name,
* favourite colour,
* favourite sport,
* favourite song, etc.

Example:
* Shake, shake, “Sam”
* Shake, shake, “Blue”

Go around the circle one at a time.

This helps with:
* timing,
* confidence,
* listening skills,
* musical memory. ([Online Scout Manager][1])

Part 4 – Copy the Leader (10 mins)
Leader creates short rhythms for everyone to copy. Examples:
* Shake shake clap clap
* Stamp clap shake shake
* Clap clap pause clap
Start easy and make them harder gradually.
You can also let confident Beavers/Cubs lead a rhythm.

Part 5 – “We Will Rock You” Rhythm (10 mins)
Teach the classic rhythm:
**Stamp – Stamp – Clap**
Repeat slowly until everyone stays together.
Then add singing:
“We will, we will rock you!”

This develops:
* group timing,
* coordination,
* performance confidence.

Part 6 – Badge Reflection / Discussion (5 mins)
Ask:
* What instruments do you know?
* What was difficult about keeping the beat?
* Why is listening important in music?
* What music do you enjoy?

You can link this to badge requirements about:
* understanding music,
* taking part in performances,
* learning rhythm and percussion.
