Description
Easy no-bake flapjacks to make with Beavers or Cubs on a campfire.
Resources
Campfire
Saucepan
Weighing scales or mugs to measure ingredient
Spoon
Takeaway tins
Soap and water
150g nut butter
150ml maple syrup
4 tbsp plant-based milk
1 tsp vanilla extract
200g porridge oats
2 tbsp ground flaxseeds
½ tsp cinnamon
125g chocolate chips
or dried fruit and nuts
Instructions
1. Explain fire safety, fire is dangerous, keep back from the fire, don’t run near the fire, don’t touch the fire, etc.
2. Set up campfire
3. Instruct beavers (and leaders!) to wash hands and explain the importance of keeping clean during food prep. Explain that mucky hands can spread bacteria which can cause food poisoning and make you feel sick.
4. Explain that flapjacks are a energy dense food to be enjoyed occasionally as a treat.
1. Grease the takeaway tins.
2. Ask a Young Leader to melt the nut butter in a pan with the maple syrup, milk and vanilla extract stirring until smooth.
3. Take off the heat and mix in the porridge oats, ground flaxseeds and ½ tsp salt and cinnamon.
4. Stir in the chocolate chips or dried fruit and nuts.
5. Spoon into the tin and level out the top.
6. Decorate them by drizzling some melted chocolate on the top and add some dried fruit.
7. Set the flapjacks aside to cool.
8. Instruct Beavers to put their flapjack in the fridge for at least 2 hours when they get home to harden.
