Instructions

Cubs gardening activities (Gardening Activity Badge Part 1/4 (We may have to revisit the plants intermittently in coming weeks to meet req 3))

Step 1 : Learning Handouts (10-15 mins)
Resources required: Handouts, Pens

- Leader per group, break out into groups on the floor and lead a discussion through the handouts.
Reading through the handout we are going to find out about gardening and fill in as we go.

- Find out about what seasons are best to grow a selection of six fruits and vegetables (Gardening Activity Badge, req 1/5)

- Learn what tools you need to garden and show that you know how to use them safely (Gardening Activity Badge, req 2/5)

- Understand what mini beasts are and why they are good for our gardens (Gardening Activity Badge, req 5/5)

**transition: Tables and chairs in a Square with a group per table and one table for leaders.**

Step 2 : Designing plant labels (10-15 mins)
Resources required: Pens, Paper, Pots, Seeds, Transparent tape

- Leaders will take a bag of seeds around and let the cubs pick one out of the bag and hand them a slip of paper to make their label.

- Next Cubs will be designing plant labels for the plants you are looking after or growing (Gardening Activity Badge, req 4/5). (labels should include a name for the seed, the type of plant and the name of the Cub.)

- Stick the labels onto the cups with the transparent tape so that the label is visible but protected.

Step 3 : Sowing the seeds (5 mins)
Resources required: Soil, Pots, Water

- Show the cubs how to plant their seed, water it and record its height in the handout.

( - This is the Germination stage of the activity where the requirement is to 'Help to look after and grow at least one item in a garden or allotment for two months (Gardening Activity Badge, req 3/5)', we will have to revisit the plants intermittently over the course of the next two months to check in on their progress, record their heights, and potentially re-plant them in a garden or allotment once they are big enough.
4) )

Step 4 : Collect the potted plants and the materials, pack away the tables, and return the handouts. (2 mins)
Resources required: Way to transport the plants and store the handouts
