Description
Scouts will learn how to take and follow compass bearings effectively.
Resources
- Compasses (enough to share among Scouts)
- Area map for practical navigation
Instructions
1. Introduction: Start by gathering the Scouts in a circle. Explain that a compass is a tool used to find direction and is essential for navigation. Emphasise the significance of understanding bearings during outdoor activities, especially in orienteering.
2. Holding a Compass: Show how to hold a compass correctly. Hold the compass flat in one hand, with the direction of travel arrow pointing away from the body. Engage the Scouts by asking them to mimic your actions. Stress the importance of keeping the compass level to obtain accurate readings.
3. Finding North: With the compass in hand, demonstrate how to find true north. Explain that the needle always points to magnetic north. Turn your body until the north end of the needle aligns with the north marking on the compass dial. Have the Scouts practise this step with their compasses, ensuring they can accurately find north.
4. Taking Bearings: Explain how to take a bearing by using the following steps:
- Identify a landmark or point they wish to navigate to.
- Rotate the compass housing until the direction of travel arrow points at the landmark, ensuring the compass remains level.
- Read the bearing at the degree marking the directional arrow.
- Share an example, such as taking a bearing toward a tree or bench in the park, and model how to do this with your own compass.
- Allow the Scouts to take turns practicing with different landmarks.
5. Practice: Pair Scouts together and assign each pair a specific landmark in the park. Each pair should take their bearings towards the specified location using their compasses and then swap roles. Walk around to monitor their progress, providing assistance where needed, and ensure they are following the correct compass techniques.
