Description
In this activity, Explorers will work in pairs to construct a practical and safe survival shelter using various pioneering techniques and materials.
Resources
- Pioneering poles (spars)
- Ropes and lashings
- Tarpaulins or other covering materials
Instructions
1. Begin with an introduction to different types of survival shelters (e.g., lean-tos, A-frames) and discuss their purposes.
2. Split Explorers into pairs and provide a selection of materials (poles, ropes, tarps).
3. Demonstrate how to tie the key knots needed for construction, such as clove hitch, square lashing, and ridge line knot.
4. Each pair will plan and sketch their shelter concept before starting to build. Ensure they understand the importance of selecting appropriate materials and structure.
5. Allow 30 minutes for pairs to construct their shelters, circulating to provide guidance.
6. After building, allow each pair to present their shelter, explaining their choices and methods.
7. Finally, conduct a brief safety check of all structures and have leaders assess the shelters for durability and practicality.
