Fake Scouting Exam

Report Copyright Infringement View in OSM UK

Description

This is an activity to make the scouts think about how much attention they pay to instructions. The scenario is a fake scouting exam, where the key is to follow the instructions. If done correctly, then only a single question must be answered. If not, then they end up answering a bunch of questions and taking longer than they wanted to.

Resources

Per scout:
- printout of the attached PDF
- a pen (so they can't rub out mistakes!)

Instructions

Set the scene that this test is to get an idea of level of scouting knowledge so that we can better plan activities that are fun for them. It's only 10-15 minutes, so best just to get it out of the way.
Set the room up like an exam hall with a desk for each scout taking part.
Each desk will have a pen on it.
Ask the scouts to quietly take their places.
Ask them to read the instructions before they begin the test and to not talk so that we can get it done quickly.
Hand out the papers and, when ready, tell the scouts that they may begin and give them somewhere between 10 and 5 minutes to finish.
Get them all to swap papers for marking, then start reading through all the answers. Almost _everything_ should be (a) apart from question 13

Once they've calmed done (as some will find the answers silly), discuss with them the importance of following instructions and what their thoughts on the outcome were.
