Life Skills - Avoiding Scams

Report Copyright Infringement View in OSM UK

Description

Scouts and Explorers need to build their understanding of common scams they will encounter online and n real life.

This is a 'back pocket' patrol/small group activity, which involves internet research. Could be done as small chunk activities alongside other sessions ("Scam of the week"), or as a back pocket to fill a quiet evening.

Resources

Internet-enabled devices
Paper, pens

Instructions

Split them into groups to research different scam types online (r/scams on reddit is good, and they've probably all seen scambaiters online), and then each patrol/group presents their scam to the group.

Discuss people's experiences as a group, and draw out common themes.:
- too good to be true
-moving money around for other people
- having to pay money in order to get money
-emotional engagement/sunk effort fallacies
-how to spot when businesses are being impersonated

[This writeup would benefit from adding links to good quality resources for the young people to be directed to e.g.:

https://www.reddit.com/r/Scams/wiki/index/automoderator/ (Do not point under-14s towards reddit, lots of NSFKids content on there, but good for getting real life examples from)

Note that reddit links are not appropriate below Explorer-age, site age limit is 13 and it has a lot of NSFW content.
