3 Bases about water harvesting and purification in the outdoors.
Base 1 : Theory & Information about pathogens
Base 2: Natural Water Collection Practise
Base 3: Processing Water Practise - filters, pumps and tablets


Resources

Enough Leaders to run 3 bases, then as many as poss (minimum 4 x)
Tarp or plastic sheeting,
1.5L plastic (eg lemonade) bottles,
Sand, Gravel, Charcoal
old T shirts or pieces cotton fabric,
large transparent plastic bags,
Billy cans,
Puritabs
Large container for muddy water
PLUS Optional for Demo: Millbank bag(s), Water Filter pump /kit

Instructions

Base 1 : Theory & Information
NEEDS OPTIONAL: flip chart, optional scouts taking notes)
Leader chats through some theory using questions to Scouts.
How to find water, Understand categories of pollutant & how to eliminate. Bullet Proof Scheme, & finish with a quiz

Base 2: Natural Water Collection Practise: Outside Scout Hut
(NEEDS transparent large bags, tarps / plastic sheets, billy cans or mugs to catch), small rocks
• Rainwater Catch Trap (using a tarp & container)
• Set up a solar still
• Collect water from the transpiration of living vegetation (bag on leafy branches)
• From dew (T-shirt sweep)

Base 3: Processing Water Practise
(NEEDS Water filter kit, Millie bags, cotton fabric / T shirt, plastic bottles, puritabs)
• Use a commercial water filter
• Set up a filter with Millie bag or fabric + sand + plastic bottle
• Using purifying tablets
