Description

In this activity, Scouts will learn about Himalayan Balsam and its environmental impact, followed by a practical removal session.

Resources

- Gardening gloves for all Scouts
- Collection bags for Himalayan Balsam
- First aid kit

Instructions

1. Gather the Scouts: Assemble Scouts for a briefing about Himalayan Balsam, its effects on local biodiversity, and the importance of removing it.
2. Safety Briefing: Explain safety tips, including wearing gloves, avoiding thorny plants, and staying clear of water edges.
3. Divide the Scouts: Split the Scouts into small groups, each accompanied by a leader or adult.
4. Set Boundaries: Define safe areas for removal; mark out regions where Scouts can work without risk.
5. Begin Removal: Encourage Scouts to carefully identify and pull out the Balsam plants, placing them in designated bags for collection.
6. Supervision: Ensure adults provide close supervision to assist with any difficulties and ensure safety.
