A VE-Day craft activity: Making hand-held Union Flags using tissue paper

Resources

You will need:
Tissue Paper (red, white, blue), cut up into squares or strips
Glue stick (one per 5-6)
Paper or card (depending on section, you may want this to have the union jack design drawn or printed onto it. This will form base of flag so should be cut to size. You may want to whole punch the ends, or you can fold it over and glue it.
Straws (one per cub)
Hole puncher (optional)
Scissors

Instructions

The result will be: handheld union flag - straw makes handle, paper makes flag base and tissue paper is stuck to paper while crumpled into little balls to make union flag design.
Start by showing section the flag design and discussing meaning, or have this drawn on for younger groups
Provide YP with tissue paper (red, white, blue) and glue and give them the task of making the flag design on the paper
Attach the paper (now with flag design) to straw - this can be by hole punching the corners and feeding straw through, or by folding the paper in half leaving a small hole by the crease for the straw.
