Description
Build a bridge using paper and sellotape to hold coins! ?️
Resources
- Sheets of paper (5 per team)
- Sellotape (1 roll per team)
- Coins (enough for testing)
Instructions
1. Form teams: Divide the Cubs into small teams of 3-5 members.
2. Explain rules: Each team must design and build a bridge using only paper and sellotape. The bridge should span a gap of at least 30 cm and be able to hold as many coins as possible without collapsing.
3. Provide materials: Distribute the following materials to each team:
- 5 sheets of paper
- 1 roll of sellotape
- A set of coins (use something like 1p coins for testing their bridges)
4. Design phase (15 minutes): Allow teams to discuss their designs and plan how they will build their bridges. Encourage them to think about how to distribute weight.
5. Build phase (30 minutes): Teams should begin constructing their bridges. Remind them to be careful with how they’re using the sellotape and ensure that their bridges are stable.
6. Testing phase (20 minutes): Once all teams have completed their bridges, have each team test their bridge by placing coins on it until it fails. Count how many coins each bridge can hold.
7. Debrief (15 minutes): Gather everyone together and discuss what worked and what didn’t. Talk about the different designs and teamwork strategies each group employed.
