Description

A Hajj related craft where Beavers make a bead tracker whilst learning to tie a reef knot.

Resources

Beads (7 for each Beaver)
String, laces or paracord
Cardboard for the base
Pens/markers

Instructions

Ask if any of the children have been on hajj or umrah. Do they remember how many times we circle the Kaaba for tawaf? And how many times we walk up and down Safa and Marwa for sa'ee? Did anyone in their group forget or feel uncertain about how many circuits they completed? Explain that some people take trackers with them to help them count and today we will make our own whilst learning a knot, called the reef knot (which is the knot on the Scouts emblem - you can point this out on their membership badge).

Give each child a thick cardboard rectangle which has a hole punched out on each side for the string to go through. It should be long enough to fit the 7 beads with space to slide them along. Allow each child to write down/draw 'hajj tracker' and their name on their cardboard then instruct them to collect (or hand out) 7 beads.

Each Beaver should thread 7 beads along their string. This can be precut or Beavers can cut their piece with the aid of a leader or helper. Once the have threaded their beads they should thread each side through the holes in the cardboard so that the thread ends are at the back.

To tie the string off at the back Beavers should be shown how to do a reef knot ensuring they do it tight enough so that the string is taut at the front.
