Imagine an escape room, square edition. Take this activity outdoors, finish off some badge requirements with your Scouts, whilst encouraging them to use their initiative and work as a team! This was enjoyable for them, and a great night to lead.

Resources

- Cones
- One tent (lightweight)
- Gas stove
- Water carrier (Half full)
- Cups
- 2 boxes of rope
- Pioneering logs, (we used old Patrol tent poles instead)
- Harmful effect cards
- Morse code alphabet
- OS map

Instructions

So you need to make two squares out of cones, this works best on a playing field or long stretch of grass. Split the Scouts into teams. Allocate each team a square. Then have instruction cards, each team get one slip of paper with an instruction, once completed they come to the side of the square and get the next challenge. They have 45 minutes to complete the challenges in their square before switching over and trying the next square. (We had 2 squares in total).

Square 1:
- Pair together harmful effect cards, achieves skills badge requirement three.
- Tie and name 6 knots, achieves pioneering badge requirement three.
- Put up a tent, achieves outdoor challenge badge requirement two.
- Using a gas stove, safely, make everyone in your group a drink. Achieves requirement four of the outdoor challenge award badge.
