Description

Covers most of the requirements for Navigator Staged Badge Level 1
A hike can be planned for later the same term which will complete the requirements if you get the beavers to follow a map.

Resources

Blank paper and pencils
Whiteboard and coloured pens
Maps of the local area with different scales
Camping ground print out

Instructions

1st activity - using plain paper and pencils, and then the whiteboard and coloured pens.
Draw a map of your back garden from above.
Put initials or names on the maps so you can tell which is yours.
These are to be discussed afterwards.
Explain why we have maps.
What’s important on a map? (compass points!!)
What shouldn’t you show on a map? (moving things)
Go to the whiteboard – draw a grid. (numbers across, letters down)
ow can we represent different types of roads?
Why do we use symbols? Mention a key.

2nd activity - using treasure maps.
We have a simplistic map of a camping ground which we use with a grid on it - numbers one side, letters on the other. I apologise because copyright prevents me uploading this.
Half of the beavers are to sit down, on one long side of the table, the others stand opposite.
The beavers are all to get a map and secretly put their initials on it where they are burying some treasure.
They must then tell the grid reference to the beaver opposite – and make a note of theirs.
The standing beavers will move – so they will then swap information with the next seated beaver and so on – everyone should end up with a map covered in initials which are in the same places.

Play the compass points game.

Finally, before sending them home mention the hike you intend to go on and ask what they should wear and take.
