Hands-on Water Filtration Activity

Report Copyright Infringement View in OSM UK

Description

Explorers will build their own water filter using materials to see how effective filtration works in practice.

Resources

- Plastic bottles
- Sand, gravel, charcoal
- Dirty water (dirt mixed with clean water)
- Buckets for waste
- First aid kit (for minor injuries)

Instructions

1. Materials Gathering: Provide each group with plastic bottles (cut in half), sand, gravel, charcoal, and cotton wool.
2. Filter Assembly: Instruct groups to layer the materials in the following order inside the top half of their bottle:
- Bottom layer: cotton wool (prevents larger debris)
- Second layer: charcoal (removes impurities)
- Third layer: sand (filters finer particles)
- Fourth layer: gravel (allows water flow)
3. Purifying Water: Have them pour dirty water (preferably dirt mixed with clean water to simulate contamination) into the filter.
4. Testing: Collect the filtered water and visually compare it to the original dirty water and discuss the results.
5. Clean up: Ensure all waste materials are disposed of properly.
