Accessible Architecture

Description
Accessible Architecture brings awareness to the extra steps that go into making an accessible world. This activity allows young people to plan their own Scout hut, but taking into consideration the 1 meter rule of accessibility (in current UK architecture guidelines)
Resources
The attached document (has 2 copies on the document)
Scissors
blue tack
colouring pencils (optional)
Glue (optional)
Instructions
1. Print out the attached file
2. give each young person a "Hut outline" and the counters, some scissors and some blue tack
3. Allow each YP to cut out each counter and add a small bit of blue tack on the back
4. Explain briefly how to allow wheelchairs to access buildings, spaces have to have 1m width to ensure they can use those spaces.
5. Explain the rules of design (on the sheet)
6. Allow YP 20 minutes to blue tack their counters onto their hut outline to design their own dream hut
7. Once complete, YP can colour or glue their counters down to their hut
While building, ask them to consider other adjustments like concrete paths vs gravel, warmer rather than bright white lights for sensory needs, quiet spaces or activities etc. Explain what it means to make "reasonable adjustments" for YP and how they can help more Scouts to access the same activities.
For added challenge:
Allow YP to draw their own things on the grid using the scale 1cm=2m (1:200)
Why not take it a step further and allow them to build their design in 3D? Use rulers, scissors and a craft knife to cut and glue foam board into place.
