Pōwhiri at a Marae
Report Copyright Infringement View in OSM UK
Description
Resources to support the organiser of a marae visit to have the their Brownies:
* experience a pōwhiri,
* learn about the history of the wharenui,
* the meaning of the carvings, and
* the tipuna of the iwi.
Resources
An envelope with your koha (traditionally cash) to present to the kaumatua of the tangata whenua
A printed copy of the mihi whakatau for the whaikōrero
Optional. A small thank you gift for the man who is representing your group during the whaikōrero.
Instructions
Explain the pōwhiri process at Brownies the week prior (10 minutes). Attached is an illustrated pōwhiri guide book, share this via email and encourage your Brownies to review this the evening prior to your visit so that each Brownie is reminded about the process and feels prepared.
As part of the pōwhiri you need a man to represent your group during the whaikōrero. They will deliver a short mihi whakatau in Te Reo on your behalf. There is a basic script for this (attached). You can ask your parents for support to find a male volunteer who would be willing to read this out during your pōwhiri. Emphasize that while you understand that this may be a challenge and you're not seeking a fluent Te Reo speaker, just someone who is prepared to role model for the Brownies how to participate respectfully in a ceremony that may be unfamiliar and to try your best.
