Instructions
Diwali is a Hindu festival celebrated in India and many other places around the world. It is called the Festival of Lights. Families light lamps (called diyas) and candles to celebrate the victory of light over darkness and good over evil. The light reminds people that hope, kindness, and truth will always win in the end.
In Hindu stories, Diwali marks the return of Lord Rama to his kingdom after defeating the demon king Ravana. People lit lamps to guide him home.
The 5 Days of Diwali (2025)
In 2025, Diwali starts on Saturday 18 October and ends on Wednesday 22 October. Each day has a special meaning:
Day 1 – Dhanteras (18 October 2025)
People clean their and decorate their homes and buy new items (often metal, like pots or coins) to bring good luck. We'll make lantern to decorate our home.
Day 2 – Naraka Chaturdashi / Choti Diwali (19 October 2025)
Celebrates the victory of Krishna over the demon. People light small lamps to drive away evil and darkness and tell the story of Rama. We'll light our lanterns and role play the History of Diwali.
Day 3 – Diwali / Lakshmi Puja (20 October 2025)
The main festival day. Families get together, pray and share sweets. We'll make some Ladoos.
Day 4 – Govardhan Puja (21 October 2025)
Celebrates Krishna lifting a mountain (Govardhan) to protect villagers from rain. People give thanks with offerings of food. We'll make a mountain with the parachute.
Day 5 – Bhai Dooj (22 October 2025)
A day to honour the bond between brothers and sisters. Sisters pray for their brothers’ wellbeing, and brothers give gifts. We'll play a brother against sisters game.
