Badge Match-Up Challenge

Description

In this fun and engaging activity, Cubs work in small teams to match various Activity Badges to the appropriate Challenge Badges they support or relate to. Using printed badge cards or a wall chart, Cubs discuss and decide which activity badges help them progress towards earning each of the six Challenge Badges (e.g., Adventure, Outdoors, Skills). This encourages teamwork, a better understanding of the badge system, and helps Cubs plan their personal development goals.

Resources

- Printed cards or images of all Activity Badges
- Printed cards or posters of the 6 Challenge Badges
- Blu tack or magnets for display
- Large sheet of paper or wall space for the final Badge Match-Up Wall Chart
- Timer or stopwatch
- Pens, sticky notes, optional reward for the winning team

Instructions

1. Introduction
Gather the Cubs together and explain that Scouts earn Activity Badges by learning and doing new things. Then explain that Challenge Badges are earned by completing a range of activities, and often activity badges support this. Briefly show them each Challenge Badge (e.g., Adventure, Outdoors, Skills, etc.) and give a quick description of what each one represents. Tell them that today's activity is a team challenge to match the right Activity Badges to the Challenge Badges they support.

2. Group Setup
Divide the Cubs into small groups (3–5 per group works well). Give each group a full set of Activity Badge cards. Place the Challenge Badge posters around the room or on a central table.

3. The Match-Up Race
When you say “Go!”, each team races to sort and place the Activity Badges under or next to the Challenge Badges they believe they relate to. Set a time limit (e.g., 10 minutes) or see who finishes first with all badges placed. Optional: Award points for correct matches to determine a winner.

4. Review and Discuss
Go through the answers as a group. Ask each team to explain some of their choices. Gently correct any mismatches and use this as a chance to reinforce learning.

5. Create the Badge Match-Up Wall Chart
Using a large poster/ wall/ whiteboard or bulletin board, recreate the correct matching of Activity Badges to Challenge Badges.
