Report Copyright Infringement View in OSM UK

Description

A drama exercise from the Theatre of the Oppressed to introduce the idea of power and get the girls thinking about their opinions of power and oppression.

Resources

Pens & paper for reflection

Instructions

1. Step 1: Demonstrate the activity with another Leader: hold your hand in front of their face about a foot away. Instruct the Leader to follow your hand as though” hypnotized”.
2. Step 2: Divide the girls into pairs or ask them to pair up themselves. If you have a larger group, ask some girls to be observers for the first activity. Ask the pairs to choose who is A and who is B. A = hypnotizer and B = hypnotized. Ask the girls to check in with each other about physical limitations today and set clear boundaries on the space which can be used to keep your partner safe.
3. Step 3: Give the pairs one minute to carry out the activity then swap roles. Encourage the girls not to speak during the activity, only to move and follow movement.
4. Step 4: Reflection – once the activity has been completed, ask the girls to take time to reflect on it. Ask them to answer the following questions – verbally or written:
• How did it feel to participate in this activity?
• Which did you prefer—being the leader or being led? Why?
• What does this activity have to do with trust? With power?
• How does this relate to society?
