Behaviours role playing activity
Report Copyright Infringement View in OSM UK
Description
To help Beavers understand how certain behaviours (talking over others, running indoors, interrupting, not taking turns) can cause problems for the group, and how making better choices keeps everyone safe and happy.
Resources
Whistle or bell (attention signal)
Soft ball or 'talking stick' (only the person holding it may speak)
Cones or chairs to mark space for role play
A few willing volunteers
Optional: stickers or points for positive listening/behaviour
Instructions
Suggest 15 mins per scenario, therefore advise 1-2 scenario per session.
Set the scene
Gather Beavers in a circle. Say: “Sometimes, our meetings get very noisy. Lots of people talk at once, and that makes it hard to hear the game or stay safe. Let’s act out what happens when that happens — and see what we can learn!” Emphasise it’s fun, not a telling-off.
How to Run Each Scenario
Each role play has a short "problem" version and a "better choice" version. After each, discuss how it felt and what everyone learned. Keep tone playful and positive.
1. Non-stop talking
Leader tries to explain a game while Beavers keep chatting. After a short while, stop and ask:
“Could anyone hear the instructions? Was it safe or fun? How do we fix that? How do you think the leader felt?”
Then replay it with great listening. Discuss what changed: “Was it easier to understand? Was it safer and more fun?”
2. Running indoors in a uncontrolled manner / overly physical play
A few Beavers run around the meeting space pretending to get ready for a game and ‘nearly crash’ into others. Pause and ask: “What could happen? How can we move safely indoors?” Replay it showing good walking and awareness.
3. Not taking turns
Two Beavers both want to go first in a relay or activity and argue. Ask: “How does that make the others feel? What could we do instead?” Replay it showing fair turn-taking or using a random chooser (e.g., roll a dice, use name sticks, cards).
4. Interrupting others
During circle time, one Beaver keeps shouting answers or talking over friends. Ask: “What happens when we all talk at once? How can we show respect?” Replay it with raised hands and listening for turns.
Reflection and Beaver Promise
After each scenario, bring everyone together and ask: “What can we do next time to make sure everyone has fun and stays safe?” Link it to the Beaver Promise — being kind, helpful, and doing our best. Praise effort and teamwork.
Learning outcomes
Beavers understand how their actions affect others.
They practise listening, empathy, and self-control.
They learn safer, fairer ways to take part in games and activities.
Reinforces respect and teamwork before active sessions.
Optional follow-up
Award "Super Listener" or "Kind Beaver" stickers for great participation.
Revisit one scenario each term as a reminder.
Encourage Beavers to come up with their own 'better choice' examples.
