Branded vs. Unbranded Taste Test
Report Copyright Infringement View in OSM UK
Description
Understand budgeting and the real value of shopping for food items, specifically between branded and unbranded products.
Resources
Identify food products that can be purchased that span brands and unbranded, and can be eaten cold if required. (f = number of foods)
Food should be prepared and allocated a letter to make items anonymous. A key to the items should be kept. The attached spreadsheet can be used as a template. This spreadsheet will also calculate the % differences between products where 0% is the most expensive item (typically branded)
Identifying markers (eg. A, B, C). Will need (f) copies.
Provide a glass at each test to allow for palette cleansing.
Ensure that food selections are respectful for allergens, intolerances and other food-based obligations (eg. belief, vegetarianism)
Instructions
Scouts are given a score sheet which they can fill in. A template of this is provided on the spreadsheet.
Each Scout must guess:
* The price of the item per pack
* Which letter is the brand (A, B or C)
* The name of the brand
* Their favourite (Ab, B or C)
Consider applying a time limit or sequencing Scouts to allow for a structured format.
One complete, go through each food group (1 through 6) and for each one:
* Identify the branded version
* Identify the brand name
* How many Scouts guessed it right? (this can go towards a scoring system you may have in place)
* Identify the price of the branded version
* Identify the price of the cheapest version
* If any Scouts preferred the unbranded versions, consider highlighting this
At the end of the session, discuss:
* The consideration of taste difference vs. cost. Sometimes it is better to go for unbranded if it's not noticeable or your on a budget
* Shops are required by law to indicate the cost against a common metric, eg. 100g. This can be used to find out what is actually cheaper regardless of pack size.
* You can get cheaper prices and deals by using store cards like Clubcards, but why? (data for brands and the store, shopping patterns, preferences)
* Are branded versions always the most expensive?
* Are branded versions always better?
