Kayak Shape and Buoyancy

Report Copyright Infringement View in OSM UK

Description

Explore how the shape of a kayak helps it float effectively.

Resources

- Large basin or tray
- Water
- Variety of materials (plastic bottles, cardboard, plastic pots) Ensure they are completely clean in case of allergies.

Badge Requirements:
- Scientist Activity Badge: Experiment - Conduct experiments to demonstrate understanding of buoyancy.

Instructions

1. Gather Materials: Collect a large basin or tray, water, and various materials (e.g., empty plastic bottles, cardboard pieces).
2. Discuss Buoyancy: Explain how the shape of a kayak is designed to displace water and provide stability.
3. Experiment:
- Place the different materials into the water and observe which ones float.
- Experiment with altering the shape of cardboard to see how changing it affects its buoyancy.
- Discuss why certain shapes float better than others and how kayaks are designed for performance on water.
