Crypto Quest: Understanding Virtual Money

Report Copyright Infringement View in OSM UK

Description

Game to highlight currencies, including virtual currencies, and their real value.

Resources

Printed or digital “Crypto Coins” (tokens or points)
If using coins consider two colours or shapes to indicate coins or kudos.

Scenario cards (examples below)

Instructions

1. Introduction (5 mins)

Ask: “What do you think virtual currency means?”
Briefly explain:

Virtual currencies are digital money (e.g., Bitcoin, game coins).
They exist online, not as physical coins.
They can be used for buying things or trading, but they need security.

"Given that, who has virtual currency?"

Scouts write down how much Virtual Currency they have and how much they paid for it.

2. Crypto Quest Game (15–20 mins)

Setup:

Each Scout/group starts with n* “Crypto Coins”.
Coins can be earned or lost based on decisions in scenarios.
Kudos can be earnt or lost, which adds realised value.
* Recommended is 4, the attached spreadsheet can be used to find the balance you're comfortable with. Modify cell O3 to make it more or less likely to prove the hypothesis with 0.4 being most likely.

How it works:

Read out scenario cards (examples below).
Scouts decide what to do (individually or in small teams).
Award or deduct coins based on choices. If a Scout runs out, they can "buy" another 3 coins with 1 kudos

Each question, a random Scout picks a random "Chance" card to introduce fluctuations in the currency. Iterate through questions until time is up.

Questions (pick a Scout, who will pick the next Scout, etc.):
See attachment. Suggest that you print each card type on different colour card to help differentiate.

You find a free app offering 100 coins if you share your password. Do you share it?

Correct: No → +3 coins
Wrong: Yes → -3 coins (also, the 100 coins was a con!)

You see something in the game you really want that costs 3 coins. Do you buy it?

Yes → -3 coins, +1 kudos
No → No change

A friend offers to trade coins for a rare badge in a game. Do you check if it’s allowed?

Correct: Yes → +3 coins
Wrong: No → -3 coins, +1 kudos

You see a message saying you’ve won 1,000 coins—just click the link. Do you click?

Correct: No → +3 coins
Wrong: Yes → -3 coins

You get the chance to buy more coins for a cheaper rate. Do you buy?

Correct: No → +3 coins, +1 kudos
Wrong: Yes → -3 coins

You receive an unsolicited invitation to join a private server for a game you like. Do you join?

Correct: No → No change
Wrong: Yes → -2 kudos

Chance cards (add fluctuations, same Scout picks)

* Beat the boss! +3 kudos
* Lose against the boss :( -2 kudos
* Game owners (eg. Epic, Roblox) put the price up: -3 kudos
* Game owners (eg. Epic, Roblox) change the price breaks (eg. change from 1,000 to 900 for £5): -3 kudos
* Game owners (eg. Epic, Roblox) put the price down: +2 kudos

3. Wrap-Up Discussion (5 mins)

At the end, have each Scout divide their earned Kudos against their spent coins.
eg. If they earnt 20 Kudos and spent 30 coins, they get 0.66.
If they get <1, they have made a loss and should think about where they went wrong.

Talk about what they learned:

Virtual currencies are useful but risky.
Virtual currencies are often sold with a sense of urgency ("get it whilst it lasts!") or price breaks (1000, for £10, 2000 for £18)
Never share passwords.
Be careful with scams and trades.
Difference between realised value and perceived value (Do I really get what I wanted for what I spent?)
