Description
Squirrels work together to make simple Christmas cookies using a lactose-free recipe suitable for all members.
Resources
For the Cookie Dough (makes ~20 small cookies):
150g dairy-free margarine (e.g., Flora Plant / Vitalite)
150g caster sugar
1 egg
1 tsp vanilla extract
300g plain flour
1 tsp baking powder
Pinch of salt
For Decoration (optional):
Icing sugar
Water
Sprinkles (check allergy labels)
Equipment:
Mixing bowls
Mixing spoons
Measuring scales
Baking trays
Greaseproof paper
Rolling pins
Cookie cutters
Access to oven
Cooling racks
Aprons (optional)
Instructions
1. Prepare (2–3 minutes):
Wash hands and put on aprons.
Explain steps to the Squirrels.
2. Make the Dough (10 minutes):
Cream dairy-free margarine and caster sugar together in a bowl.
Add the egg and vanilla extract, then stir.
Add flour, baking powder, and a pinch of salt.
Mix and gently knead into a soft dough.
Leaders help split tasks so everyone participates (mixing, pouring, stirring).
3. Roll and Cut (5–7 minutes):
Lightly flour the table.
Roll out the dough to approx. 1 cm thick.
Children use cookie cutters to cut out shapes (stars, trees, etc.).
Lay shapes onto baking trays lined with greaseproof paper.
4. Bake the Cookies (10–12 minutes):
Bake at 180°C until lightly golden.
Leaders operate the oven at all times.
Allow to cool on racks before decorating or packing.
